Monkee Music Satan Distortion

Been waiting a long time to post this one up. Yup. It is 1:1 with Rocktek DIR-01 Distortion. The schematic i found was missing a couple of values, so instead of guessing i got myself an original and checked them. My original just happens to be this beautiful japanese plastic thing. It doesn't quite reach the unity level, but there's one resistor determining the overall level. I marked that with an asterisk on the layout with a note, so you can swap it for something like 10K. This one is definitely nice platform for trying on some mods. Schematic is up at FSB.

While checking for additional info, i ran into this perfect demo video of later Rocktek unit. Priceless. Just Priceless.

  1. Ha,ha!........LOVED the demo from "not so" PGS 8~))
Especially the comment about the 65 Soho amp....I always wondered if anyone else thought that was a strange amp to demo pedals with(?)

  2. LOL, nice roast of PGS. It doesn't seem like it should be that bad of a pedal but... :P

    1. I laughed out loud through the whole thing.

The circuit in the original is well built and it doesn't sound bad. The box (and not getting over unity) is the thing that makes this totally undesirable. Cloning with couple of mods may really be worth it.

  5. Hi guys, My name is Greg Lynn. I'm a comedian, musician and multi-media artist, and I actually recorded the "Not so Pro" fake demo. I'm glad it has been appreciated!! Thanks!!

I still haven't heard what Andy thinks of the video. I believe good parody comes from those who love the source material first. I hope Andy understands that.

    1. Hah! Great to have you on board!

You should definitely do more of those videos. There are tons of cheap pedals around.

  8. I build this, but there is a problem with the Gain pot. The gain is on max all time and the pot dosent respond at all.

  9. Hey guys, i was meant to post on this earlier that this one can be tagged as verified. I modded it to give it a bit more bass because it's very harsh even with treble at minimum. I also added i think it was 50kB for the gain pot. I found there was still some surprisingly decent sounds with the lower gain settings. At minimum gain I'm getting a nice amount of drive, still very useable, almost like an Amp Eleven at higher gain settings (without low end control). Still might play with the caps and get it to a point where tone knob at 12:00 is more comfortable.

In conclusion though this pedal gave me some almost fuzzed out tones at max gain, nice overdrive at minimum, and somewhere in between could nail the Strokes style Nick Valensi lead guitar sound which i love. Kinda like the distortion side of a Jekyll.
